Ren Ng presents: A tale of three novel colors: olo, keef and litz

This talk will be about research into novel human color perception.  We showed human subjects a novel color, olo, by individually stimulating thousands of cells on the retina with laser microdoses, using a system we call Oz Vision.  Olo corresponds to targeting only M cone cells and not L or S cones, which never happens in natural vision.  Olo appears blue-green of unprecedented saturation.  In theory, there are other novel colors that could not be as easily described. This talk will present the mathematical theory of two such tetrachromatic colors, keef and litz, and work towards prototyping them in the real world.

In this article, we explore the impact of the non-uniform aspect (also called texture) of human perception. This paper provides results on the required level of variation for humans to perceive two non-uniform surfaces as being different. The first step was to define the non-uniform image to use. As the focus was on vision and not brain analysis, the images had to be non-semantic. We chose to generate images from 3D Gaussian noise. Then, a psychophysical experiment was conducted presenting two images. The observer needed to choose the more textured one. The results show that, on average, humans are sensitive to the smallest variation of noise in the image

A Look Inside Our Quarterly:

Blue Morphos Have a Cool Color

I first encountered the blue morpho in Kai Kupferschmidt’s book, Blue: In Search of Nature’s Rarest Color, which I reviewed in Issue 504 of ISCC News. There I learned about a tricky problem that the butterfly appears to have solved through natural selection. Interference patterns can lead to brilliant structural colors, but the color you see generally depends on the angles of illumination and viewing.
